Two days ago on June 14th, I was fortunate enough to find that I was the winner of the European Facilities Management Network (EuroFM) European Research of the Year Award at the European Facilities Management Conference (EFMC) held in Dublin, Ireland.

It came as a complete surprise, as I was amoungst three equally as talented finalists for the award. It is wonderful to be recognised for my teachings and research, and I hope this is only the beginning of lots of exciting projects to come. Getting my PhD and this award within less than a month is almost too much!

The EFMC

This awards ceremony comes off the back of one of the highlights of the Facilities Management calendar, the EFMC. Held every year in June, it is a wonderful crossroads where academia and practice intertwine, new and cutting edge research is shared, and old friends meet. Equally as inspiring is the student element, where students from all over Europe present videos of their FM research and even get a chance to win a prize themselves!

Conferences are a fantastic way of presenting and getting feedback on your research in a way that publications simply cannot acheive. A coffee in the corridor, or a pint in the evening with the right people can generate priceless opportunities for business and research.

I was also lucky enough to get a chance to make a presentation myself, the subject on this occasion being the results of my PhD project.

In my case I find the most inspiring moments on these occasions to be not just the people I meet, but how widely I can grow my network at these types of events. To me, the EFMC represents the heart of what we try to achieve at EuroFM.

Next years conference is being held in Barcelona, which I am sure will be equally as unmissable as previous ones. See you there next June!
